A unique island cluster intimately tied to the life of a city....

The Boston Harbor Islands National Park Area includes 34 islands situated within the Greater Boston shoreline.  The islands are rich in natural and cultural resources. Imagine a place where you can walk through a Civil War era fort, explore tide pools, climb our nation's most historic lighthouse, hike lush trails and salt marshes, camp under the stars, or relax while fishing, picnicking or swimming...all within reach of downtown Boston.

Tour Fort Warren on Georges Island

Dominated by Fort Warren, a National Historic Landmark, this 39-acre island is the center of transportation to the islands. Seven miles from downtown Boston, Georges Island contains a large dock, picnic grounds, food stand, open fields, paved walk ways, a parade ground and a gravel beach. Guided tours of Fort Warren are offered. Georges also has Family Fun Days, each summer weekend offering a different theme.

Little and Great Brewster Island

Tour Little Brewster Island, home of Boston Light.

Join us for a three and one-half-hour ranger-guided tour of Little Brewster Island and Boston Light, the oldest light station in the country. This program includes a 45 minute narrated harbor tour in which you will view the three other lighthouses of Boston Harbor.  On Little Brewster Island, you will have two hours to explore and learn about the light station's history. You also have the opportunity to climb to the top of the light tower, where you will enjoy a spectacular view of the harbor and Boston's skyline.

Enjoy a day of island hopping at one of five other islands: Spectacle, Peddocks, Grape, Bumpkin, or Lovells. Among the things you may do here: enjoy a free island tour by a Park Ranger; swim at a lifeguarded beach; climb inside a World War I gun battery; spot a piping plover and a snowy egret; or camp out a short walk from the seashore. Climate

Temperatures vary from the 50s in spring and fall to the 80s in mid-summer. Please remember that Boston weather can change quickly, especially in the Harbor. Water breezes make for cooler ferry rides, sometimes requiring jackets or windbreakers. Walking shoes, hats, and sunscreen are essential.
